Our Immutable History

The journey of Sanskriti began in 1953 with the organization of its first Durga Puja by early Bengali settlers in Borivali, primarily at Daulat Nagar. The Biswas and Dey families, with the involvement of prominent figures such as Late Chandrababu Biswas, Shanti Ranjan De, Sudhir De, Ranjeet De, Ardhendu Chakraborty, and Paresh Bhowmik, took the initiative. Soon, other Bengali families in the Borivali area, including Basu Chatterjee, Jiten Mukherjee, and Nakul Mukherjee, became actively involved.

The first president of the club was the renowned Indian film director, Late Bimal Roy, and the first secretary was Late Nakul Mukherjee. The inaugural Durga idol was crafted by Abani Dasgupta, assisted by the eminent filmmaker and screenwriter, Basu Chatterjee. This first Durga Puja took place at the Mudgaonkar Bungalow Compound, now the site of Borivali (West) Police Station. Musical legends such as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Ustad AllaRakha graced the cultural program. In subsequent years, artists like Manna Dey, Hemanta Mukherjee, and Mahendra Kapoor performed voluntarily, adding to the grandeur of the celebration. The second Durga Puja was held at the Rail Colony near present-day Borivali (East).

For many years, Borivali Durga Puja was the only celebration of its kind in the western suburbs, attracting attendees from as far as Andheri. Despite the challenges of the 1962 China-India war and the enforcement of evening blackouts, the strong will of women like Mrs. Anjali Sen, Sheela Dasgupta, and Mrs. Maya Ghosh ensured that the Puja continued. With the support of Abani Dasgupta and family, the Puja was successfully held at Carter Road. The blackout was lifted just in time for Durga Puja, and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan performed overnight with tabla accompaniment by Ustad AllaRakha. A unique addition to the Borivali Puja was the "Dhak," not the typical Kolkata style but a homemade version crafted and played by Abani Dasgupta himself.

In 1981, under the leadership of Badal Dey, his cousins, Mr. Khokan De (Mrinal De), and Sanjay Dasgupta (son of Late Abani Dasgupta), Durga Puja began to be celebrated under the banner of Sanskriti. By 1984, the Puja had moved to Pai Nagar Ground, now the site of Prabodhanker Thakre Hall & Theatre Complex. This period saw the rise of leaders like Late H.N. Chakraborty (of Free Press Journal) and Mr. D.P. Dev (M/s Top Syringe), along with Mr. Hiralal Bhattacharya, who ensured financial stability. Until 2001, Hinduja Hall (Borivali East) was the hub of Sanskriti’s activities.

A new era began when the venue shifted to the larger Shiv-seva Samajik Shikshan Sanstha Ground (Rajendra Nagar). The club thrived under the leadership of Mr. Anup Mukherjee, who spearheaded it for nine years until 2012, followed by Mr. T.K. Roy for three years, and D.B. Banerjee for two years until 2017. Special mention must be made of Mr. R.C. Banerjee, whose contributions over 25 years in pivotal roles propelled the club forward with strong leadership.

Our immediate past chairman, Mr. Gautam Mukhopadhyay, led Sanskriti with dedication until 2022. Since 2023, the club has been guided by our current chairman, Mr. Nanda Dulal Kundu.

Registered under the Public Trust Act with Registration No. F-7286 (BOM), Sanskriti continues to uphold its rich legacy of cultural and community service under his capable leadership.
